A KARATE club raised hundreds of pounds by packing bags for supermarket shoppers.

The Chikara Dojo of Kyokushin karate, based in Spennymoor, County Durham, collected £640 from grateful customers during a day of helping at the check-outs at the town's Asda store.

Added to individual donations and a contribution from AKV Architectural Fabrications in Shildon, they collected £790 during the fundraising effort.

Parent representative and former student Ken Lowes, who helped organise the event, thanked shop staff and supporters.

He said: “Yet again, ASDA has proved its commitment to our community by allowing members of the Chikara Dojo of Kyokushin karate to raise funds with a bag pack.

"It’s incredible to see such support for the club and we would like to thank everyone for their kind donations. Your support is very much appreciated."
