JUNIOR table tennis players have made a flying start to the new season.

Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club Boys finished the first stage of the Junior British League, which they qualified for in July, at the top of the table.

The league saw more than 300 talented players from clubs across the UK compete in eight boys and four girls divisions at Derby Arena last weekend.

The team of Sam Hume, Lee Tinkler, Max Duffin and Harvey McDonald notched up three draws and two wins and were the only unbeaten side in the division.

Bishop Auckland Girls saw Anya Milne, 12, and Amy Mold, 13, make their debuts alongside 15-year-old Gracie Edwards.

Coach Matt Porter said the trio, thought to be the youngest team in the hall, lost all their matches but showed real promise.
