CHILDREN hope to make plenty of dough for a charity whose founder inspired them to get involved.

Pupils at Vane Road Primary School in Newton Aycliffe, a Rights Respecting School, have decided to support the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust.

Mark Solan, founder of the Spennymoor-based charity and ITV Tyne Tees Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year 2017, gave an assembly to tell children he set it up in memory of his mother and gran and to help people affected by cancer in a variety of ways. Inspired by his story and work, youngsters are decorating and selling biscuits during December break-times in aid of the charity.

Marie Rome, head of PSHE, said: "I have never seen the children so absorbed and interested in a person."

She hopes the assembly not only made youngsters keen to help but also easier for them to talk about cancer, as many have known someone with the disease.

A year four community week will include a family activity and carol singing at Rose Lodge Care Home.
