CHRISTMAS crafts, stalls, games and a visit from Santa will feature in a festive event this weekend which will help fund a once-in-a-lifetime trip for kind-hearted teens.

Bethany Ruiz-Watson and Holly Scott, students at St John's School and Sixth Form in Bishop Auckland, and English teacher Stephanie Robinson will hold a Christmas extravaganza at the school on Saturday, 10am to 12.30pm. Tickets are £2 for adults and £1.50 for children, from srobinson@stjohnsrc.org.uk

Seventeen-year-olds Bethany, from Bishop Auckland, and Holly, from Shildon, are among around 20 students and staff from St John's who will take part in Project Peru next July.

During the two week trip to a village in the Amazon rainforest, they will voluntarily work on community projects. In previous years, the school helped build a classroom and a bakery creating valuable amenities and jobs. Each has to raise £2,100 to fund the trip.

Bethany said: "It'll be a great experience for us and the people over there we help."
