RESIDENTS and groups from the Spennymoor area can help their town pay tribute to its fallen heroes and mark the centenary of the First World War.

Spennymoor Town Council will hold a public meeting for individuals and organisations such as churches and veterans groups who might be interested in learning about or getting involved with the town's Remembrance Sunday service.

Spennymoor Town Mayor Ian Machin will also outline other events which the council will support in 2018, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the 1914-1918 conflict.

Initiatives include the creation of a new commemorative flower bed designed by local youngsters which follows a competition for children at all the area's schools.

The meeting will be held in the council chamber at Spennymoor Town Hall on Thursday, February 8, at 10am.

Interested people are invited to attend the meeting and those that may wish to be involved in the Remembrance Service on November 11, but who cannot attend the meeting, can contact the council on 01388-815276.
