A GIRL is appealing for sponsors to help her fundraising campaign in aid of two cancer charities soar.

Katie Lax, of Byers Green, will travel to Wales next month to 'fly' on the mile-long Zip World Velocity, the longest zip line in Europe and the fastest in the world.

Sponsorship money she collects for completing the zipwire will be donated to The Christie Charity, a cancer centre in Manchester, and the Spennymoor-based Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust.

The fundraising is part of the 12-year-old's journey to the Miss Junior Galaxy UK pageant on Saturday, March 24, as County Durham's representative.

A pupil at King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland, she hopes to win a place in the international contest in Florida.

She said: "I like to challenge myself whilst raising money for charity and this seemed the ideal opportunity. I'm really excited and would like to raise around the £300 mark which would give two amazing charities £150 each. I've raised £50 so far through donations and sponsors."

To sponsor her call into her mother Lorraine's shop Beautiful Brides, in Spennymoor. Or to make a donation by paypal do so to beautiful_brides@hotmail.co.uk with your name followed by 'zipwire' as the reference.
